Before my passion for movies really set in I thought three things were taking over the world. McDonald’s, Walmart, and Disney. They seemed to be everywhere or own everything. You had McDonald’s in Walmarts and Disney toys in McDonald’s, IN Walmarts. But since doing my research and having my passion (some would say obsession) take over, I have come to realize that up until superheroes and Star Wars, Disney didn't dominate the box office as much as I thought. I assume some of you are thinking, "How could a company that brought in over $20 billion before “Avengers” or “Frozen" even hit the scene not dominate?". Well, let me tell you.

Obviously, Walt Disney Pictures has come out with some of the most iconic and amazing motion pictures this world has ever seen. There is no questioning or disputing that. You can’t talk to a little girl in the world that hasn't heard of Cinderella, Belle, Ariel and the beautiful “Sleeping Beauty.” Shoot, even Lightning McQueen, Mater, Crush the turtle, and Mr. Incredible are in every little boy’s toy box. They’ve made something for everyone, but up until Disney hit home with the Marvel movies and Lucasfilm, they didn't scratch the box office like Warner Bros., Comcast and Viacom. For example, if we take Marvel and Lucasfilm out and list the top 10 highest grossing movies of all time and the studios that made them— here is what we get;

Avatar: Fox

Titanic: Paramount (Viacom)

Jurassic World: Universal (Comcast)

Furious 7: Universal (Comcast)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2: Warner Bros.

Frozen: Disney

Minions: Universal (Comcast)

Transformers 3: Paramount (Viacom)

Lord of the Rings 3: Miramax

Skyfall (James Bond): Sony

Transformers 4: Paramout (Viacom)

That means without Marvel and Lucasfilm, Disney would have only one movie in the top ten highest grossing movies of all time. It’s obvious Disney wasn't exactly struggling: seeing how they could pay $4 billion for Marvel and another $4 billion for Lucasfilm. Don't worry though! Their investment has paid off. Lets re-do the list with Marvel and Lucas doing their thing:

I’ll pause for a second while you pick up your jaw…

I don't know if you have ever been punched in the face, but it’s not exactly something that goes unnoticed. Warner Bros has felt it. Their left cheek is swollen and now they are stumbling around the superhero cinematic world trying to gain traction again. WB owns DC comics. If you ask any comic book nerd, they will likely tell you that DC has much better writing and more compelling heroes in the comic world. Luckily, we got an amazing director that captured the depth of one of these characters and brought it to the big screen. There are very few people that would disagree that the Dark Knight trilogy is amidst the best superhero movies ever, but what happens when DC tries to match the Justice League with The Avengers? We get Batman V Superman.

Have you ever gotten really sick in school? Like you missed two or three weeks? Then when you come back it’s like the world went on without you and now you have to play catch up? Warner Bros woke up from having the chicken pocks and realized the world went on to this super hero craze without them. Now they are playing catch up and there is just no way they are going to manage it. They crammed for the finals by jamming Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg in a film together. To keep with the analogy — the score achieved on the test of BvS was a D+. Maybe a C. Batman v Superman seemed like it was Warner Bros. last super hero shot! But somehow it seems the masses are willing to give them one last chance to blow them away. With Suicide Squad, Warner Bro’s will either stay afloat or fail epically.

I could bring Zack Snyder into this, but I think he's been burned enough. I’ll leave him out of it.

Before signing off let me stop and remind you— I’m talking a very specific genre of cinema. Warner Bros made Mad Max: Fury Road, which was nominated for best picture last year and rightfully so. By no means am I saying Warner Bros. is out of the game in all of cinema, but when it comes to superhero movies, without Christopher Nolan, kryptonite isn't Superman’s only weakness.
